Konza Prairie

About this spectacle

Konza Prairie is a protected tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas, where visitors walk through seas of big bluestem, indiangrass, and switchgrass that ripple in the wind like a living ocean. In late spring and early summer the landscape bursts with wildflowers — purple coneflowers, blazing stars, and prairie clovers punctuate the green and gold grasses. Periodic prescribed burns reset the prairie, and in the weeks after a burn the landscape transforms dramatically: jet-black charred ground gives way to vivid emerald regrowth. Bison roam portions of the reserve, while meadowlarks and dickcissels fill the air with song. The rolling Flint Hills topography gives sweeping panoramas under wide Kansas skies, and on calm evenings the grasses glow amber in the low light. Hiking trails wind through the research natural area, offering solitude and an immersive encounter with one of North America's rarest ecosystems.
