Kazinga Channel Hippo & Waterbird Assembly — Uganda
The Kazinga Channel connecting Lake Edward and Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park concentrates Uganda's most diverse waterbird and hippo assemblage in a 32-kilometre channel of exceptional productivity. The twice-daily boat trip from Mweya produces one of Africa's finest wildlife boat experiences: the channel banks lined with African skimmers, goliath herons, yellow-billed storks, and open-billed storks in continuous activity, while 2,000+ hippos occupy the channel in territorial groups whose constant motion — surfacing, submerging, blowing, and challenging each other — keeps the water in perpetual disturbance. Buffalo herds drink at the channel margins, elephants wade through the shallow sections, and the evening boat trip returns with the setting sun illuminating the channel's waterbird density in the horizontal light of the African evening. The Kazinga boat trip is consistently rated among Uganda's finest wildlife experiences.
About this spectacle
Climbing aboard a launch at Mweya Peninsula, visitors enter one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife corridors. The Kazinga Channel's banks are alive with motion: African skimmers skim the glassy surface, goliath herons stand sentinel in the shallows, and yellow-billed and open-billed storks stalk the margins in continuous, chaotic activity. The water itself is seldom still — more than 2,000 hippos occupy the channel in territorial clusters, their rhythmic surfacing, thunderous exhalations, and aggressive lunges keeping the surface boiling. Buffalo herds materialise at the water's edge, lowering massive heads to drink, while elephants wade through shallow sections, indifferent to the passing boat. The evening cruise is particularly memorable: warm horizontal light turns the channel golden, silhouetting herons against a glowing sky and catching the spray of surfacing hippos in amber. The density of large mammals and waterbirds in a single continuous sweep is almost disorienting — a sensory overload of snorts, splashing, wingbeats, and birdsong sustained for the entire journey.
