Each spring, Pretoria transforms into a city draped in vivid purple as tens of thousands of jacaranda trees burst into bloom simultaneously. The streets, parks, and avenues are canopied in dense clusters of lavender-blue flowers, creating a surreal violet haze visible even from elevated viewpoints across the city. Fallen petals carpet footpaths and lawns in a soft purple layer, while the air carries a faint sweet fragrance. Church Street and the Union Buildings lawns are among the most celebrated vantage points, where the canopy effect is most dramatic. The bloom is fleeting — typically lasting a few weeks — lending it a bittersweet, ephemeral quality.
