About this spectacle

Each spring, the hills of Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture are blanketed in millions of Nemophila menziesii — small, sky-blue flowers that stretch across the slopes in a seamless azure carpet. Visitors walk winding paths through the blooms, with the pale blue of the flowers mirroring the open sky above. The gentle coastal breeze carries a soft floral freshness across the hillsides. At the peak of bloom, the entire Miharashi Hill transforms into a surreal ocean of blue, offering sweeping panoramic views. The park is well-maintained with clear footpaths, making the spectacle accessible to most visitors. The effect is almost otherworldly — a living, breathing gradient of blue that draws photographers and casual visitors alike from across Japan and beyond.
