Het Zwin Nature Reserve
A tidal salt marsh on the Dutch-Belgian border alive with spoonbills, avocets, and thousands of migratory shorebirds across every season.
About this spectacle
Het Zwin is a tidal salt marsh and nature reserve straddling the Dutch-Belgian border, best known for its rich birdlife and dynamic coastal wetland scenery. Visitors wander through expanses of glasswort and sea lavender that flush purple in late summer, while the tidal channels fill and drain with each cycle, drawing wading birds, ducks, and shorebirds in impressive numbers. Spoonbills, grey herons, avocets, and a parade of migratory species pass through across the seasons. The reserve includes a well-developed visitor centre with hides and elevated walkways that let you scan the mudflats and lagoons without disturbing wildlife. The soundscape — wind, waves, and the calls of hundreds of birds — is a defining part of the experience. Autumn and spring migration pulses bring the highest diversity, while breeding season fills the reserve with nesting activity. The flat, open landscape offers long sightlines and big skies, making every visit feel unhurried and expansive.
