About this spectacle

Each late summer, Dartmoor's wide open moorland transforms into a sweeping sea of purple as heather comes into full bloom. Walking the high tors and boggy valleys, visitors are surrounded by a low, fragrant haze and the constant hum of bees working the flowers. The landscape shifts from its usual austere greens and browns to rich violet and magenta, stretching as far as the eye can see across the granite plateau. On clear days, the contrast between the purple carpet and the dramatic sky above creates an almost surreal vista. Ponies graze undisturbed among the blooms, and skylarks rise overhead. The warm, resinous scent of the heather mingles with the peaty moorland air, making the experience deeply sensory. Early morning visits offer the best light and a sense of solitude before other walkers arrive.
