Hawksbill Sea Turtle Nesting — Milman Island
One of Australia's most important hawksbill nesting beaches, on a remote coral cay at the tip of Queensland where ancient turtles haul ashore each night.
About this spectacle
Milman Island, a remote coral cay in the northern Great Barrier Reef, hosts one of Australia's most significant hawksbill sea turtle nesting aggregations. At night during the nesting season, female hawksbills haul themselves laboriously up the pale sand beach, excavate deep nests with their flippers, and deposit clutches of leathery eggs before returning to the sea. Visitors who are fortunate enough to witness this ancient ritual experience the eerie stillness of a near-pristine tropical island under a canopy of stars, broken only by the soft rasping of turtle flippers on sand and the distant lap of the Coral Sea. Hatchlings emerging en masse create a frantic, instinct-driven scramble toward the water. The island's extreme remoteness means very few people ever witness this spectacle, lending the experience an extraordinary sense of privilege and solitude.
