Hawksbill Sea Turtle Nesting — Fernando de Noronha
One of Brazil's most protected islands hosts hawksbill sea turtles nesting on moonlit beaches—a closely supervised, once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
About this spectacle
On the remote volcanic island of Fernando de Noronha, hawksbill sea turtles haul themselves onto sheltered beaches under the cover of darkness to nest. Visitors who secure access to guided night-watch programs may witness a female turtle laboriously excavating a nest cavity in the sand, depositing dozens of leathery eggs, and then returning to the warm Atlantic. The air is thick with tropical humidity, waves lap nearby, and the scene unfolds in near-silence so as not to disturb the animal. Later in the season, tiny hatchlings emerge en masse and scramble toward the surf—a frantic, poignant spectacle. The island's strict conservation rules limit visitor numbers and require ranger accompaniment, preserving both the turtles and the atmosphere of raw wildness that makes this encounter genuinely moving.
