Hawk Migration Veracruz Corridor — Mexico

The Veracruz River of Raptors at the town of Chichicaxtle in Mexico's Veracruz state is the world's greatest raptor migration count — up to 5 million raptors of 47 species funnelled through the narrow coastal plain between the Gulf of Mexico and the Sierra Madre Oriental in September and October, creating a sustained migration spectacle of raptors streaming past counting stations at rates of over 100,000 birds per hour on peak days. Broad-winged hawks, Swainson's hawks, Mississippi kites, and turkey vultures form the mass movement, with rarer species including plumbeous kite, zone-tailed hawk, and hook-billed kite adding diversity. Watching from the Chichicaxtle ridge on a peak day in early October — the sky above filled from horizon to horizon with swirling raptor kettles, the birds streaming southward in a continuous river — is the most overwhelming raptor spectacle available anywhere on Earth.

About this spectacle

Standing on the Chichicaxtle ridge on a peak October morning, visitors witness one of nature's most staggering spectacles: raptors filling the sky from horizon to horizon. Broad-winged hawks, Swainson's hawks, Mississippi kites, and turkey vultures funnel through the narrow coastal plain between the Gulf of Mexico and the Sierra Madre Oriental in a continuous southward river. On exceptional days, counting stations log more than 100,000 birds per hour — the sheer volume creating an audible rush and constant motion overhead. Kettles of thousands spiral upward on thermals before streaming off in undulating lines, layer upon layer, low enough that individual wing beats are visible. The sustained nature of the migration — lasting through all of September and October — means visitors rarely leave empty-handed. Rarer species like plumbeous kite, zone-tailed hawk, and hook-billed kite reward patient scanning. The combination of scale, accessibility, and near-certainty makes Chichicaxtle the single most overwhelming raptor experience available anywhere on Earth.
