Halsbandsittich-Schlafplatz Wiesbaden
Thousands of vivid green ring-necked parakeets pour into their communal roost each evening in the heart of Wiesbaden — one of Europe's most surprising urban wildlife spectacles.
About this spectacle
Each evening at dusk, hundreds — sometimes thousands — of ring-necked parakeets (Halsbandsittich) converge on their communal roost in Wiesbaden, filling the air with a cacophony of shrieking calls and a blizzard of vivid green feathers. The spectacle unfolds as birds stream in from multiple directions, wheeling in loose flocks before dropping into their favoured trees. Visitors standing below experience the noise, colour and sheer energy of one of Central Europe's most unexpected urban wildlife events: a tropical-looking bird thriving in a German city. The roost is most spectacular in autumn and winter when flocks swell and bare-branched trees make sightings easier. The gathering reaches its climax in the final minutes before dark, then suddenly falls quiet as birds settle for the night.
