Gwangyang Maehwa Plum Village
One of Korea's most beloved spring spectacles: thousands of plum trees burst into white and pink blossom in a fragrant riverside village each March.
About this spectacle
Each spring, Gwangyang Maehwa Plum Village erupts in a sea of white and pale-pink blossoms, the air thick with the delicate fragrance of plum flowers. Situated in South Korea's Jeollanam-do province, the village and its surrounding orchards transform into one of Korea's most celebrated floral landscapes. Visitors walk between ancient, gnarled plum trees draped in blossoms, with the Seomjin River and distant mountains providing a painterly backdrop. The sound of birdsong mingles with the scent of flowers, and on clear days the reflection of blossoms in nearby waterways adds another layer of beauty. Local stalls sell plum-related foods and products, lending a festive atmosphere to the grounds. The bloom is brief — typically peaking over just a few weeks — making each visit feel precious and time-sensitive.
