Großer Knechtsand Kegelrobben
One of Germany's most important grey seal colonies, hauling out in large numbers on a remote North Sea sandbank amid the Wadden Sea tidal flats.
About this spectacle
Großer Knechtsand is a vast sandbank in the German Bight of the North Sea, where grey seals — Kegelrobben in German — haul out in impressive numbers to rest, breed, and moult. Visitors approaching by boat witness sprawling colonies of large, barrel-bodied seals basking on exposed sand, filling the air with their distinctive grunting calls. The spectacle is most dramatic in winter, when females give birth to white-coated pups on the open sand, and the beach becomes a nursery of movement and noise. Outside the breeding season, groups of moulting and resting adults remain year-round. The surrounding tidal flats attract thousands of shorebirds, adding layers of wildlife interest. The flat, open horizon and low golden light of the Wadden Sea give the scene a raw, elemental quality — wind-swept, salty, and entirely wild.
