About this spectacle

Standing at the rim of Cañón del Río Lobos, you watch griffon vultures launch themselves from limestone cliff ledges with a crack of enormous wings, riding thermals upward in tightening spirals until they vanish into blue sky. The canyon walls amplify every wingbeat and guttural call, filling the gorge with sound. Dozens of birds may be visible simultaneously — soaring, squabbling at roosts, or descending steeply to a carcass below. The smell of pine and juniper scrub drifts up from the river valley. This is one of the most accessible griffon vulture breeding colonies in Spain, where the birds nest on exposed cliff faces and can be observed at close range from marked trails along the canyon floor and rim. Spring brings intense activity as pairs tend nests and juveniles take first flights; autumn sees the colony at rest before winter.
