Grey Seal Pupping (Lincolnshire / Orkney) — Isle of May
Hundreds of grey seal mothers and white-coated pups crowd the Isle of May's rocky shores each autumn in one of Britain's most intimate wildlife spectacles.
About this spectacle
The Isle of May, a small island in the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland, hosts one of Britain's most dramatic grey seal pupping events each autumn and winter. As hundreds of mothers haul out onto rocky shores and grassy banks, the air fills with the haunting calls of newborn pups — white-coated, wide-eyed, and impossibly photogenic. Visitors who make the boat crossing witness pups nursing, bulls jostling for position, and the raw, chaotic energy of a major breeding colony. The smell of salt, seaweed, and seal is ever-present. Pups grow visibly week by week, shedding their white lanugo coats as they prepare for independence. The island's dramatic sea-cliff backdrop, with crashing North Sea swells, adds to the atmosphere. Seabirds wheel overhead, and the sense of witnessing untamed wildlife at close range — with no barrier between you and the colony — is genuinely arresting.
