Grey Seal Pupping (Lincolnshire / Orkney) — Horsey Beach
Every winter, Horsey Beach hosts one of England's most accessible grey seal pupping colonies — hundreds of white-furred newborns alongside their mothers on a Norfolk beach.
About this spectacle
Each winter, hundreds of grey seals haul out onto the wide, flat sands of Horsey Beach in Norfolk to give birth. Visitors walk the beach boardwalk to find fluffy white pups nursing beside their mothers, the air filled with the grunts and calls of one of England's largest grey seal colonies. Bulls patrol offshore or rest near females, occasionally sparring. The scene is raw and immediate — newborn pups with dark eyes against cream fur, mothers surprisingly unperturbed by distant observers. Volunteer wardens manage viewing distances to protect the animals. The smell of the sea mixes with the distinctive musk of the colony. On still winter mornings, with low light raking across the beach, the spectacle feels genuinely wild despite being accessible from a public path.
