Greater Flamingo Breeding Aggregation (Camargue) — Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary
One of India's most dramatic flamingo gatherings, where thousands of Greater Flamingos turn Gujarat's shallow Nal Sarovar lake a vivid pink.
About this spectacle
Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat is one of India's largest bird sanctuaries, centered on a shallow seasonal lake that draws vast congregations of Greater Flamingos during the breeding season. Visitors witness expanses of pink-tinged water as thousands of flamingos feed, display, and nest in dense colonies across the marshy shallows. The sight of synchronized flocks lifting into flight, wings flashing coral and black, is visually arresting. Boat rides through the reed beds bring observers close to nesting islands where the birds congregate in numbers large enough to turn the horizon pink. The surrounding wetlands also host pelicans, spoonbills, painted storks, and numerous migratory waterfowl, creating a layered spectacle of birdlife. Early mornings offer the best light and the most active feeding behavior, with mist rising from the water and birds calling in a continuous chorus.
