Greater Flamingo Breeding Aggregation (Camargue) — Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary
Thousands of Greater Flamingos turn Gujarat's coastal wetlands vivid pink during breeding season — one of India's most dramatic bird spectacles.
About this spectacle
Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, on the edge of the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, hosts one of India's most striking concentrations of Greater Flamingos during the breeding season. Visitors witness vast pink clouds of birds wading through shallow brackish lagoons, their collective calls creating a constant low roar across the wetlands. The contrast of flamingo-pink against the flat, shimmering saltpans and distant mangroves is visually arresting. At dawn the light catches thousands of plumage-bright birds simultaneously probing the mud for algae and invertebrates. The sanctuary also draws pelicans, herons, and waders, but the flamingo aggregation dominates the landscape. The air carries a saline, marshy scent, and the sound of wingbeats as flocks shift position punctuates the morning calm.
