Great Wildebeest Migration
1.5 million wildebeest complete an annual 1,800km loop through the Serengeti and Masai Mara — the largest land migration on Earth.
About this spectacle
Standing at the Mara River, you hear them before you see them — a deep rumble of hooves as columns of wildebeest pour over the savanna horizon. The Great Wildebeest Migration sees roughly 1.5 million animals completing an 1,800 km annual circuit between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. The river crossings are the visceral centrepiece: wildebeest plunge into crocodile-patrolled waters in churning, chaotic surges, scrambling up muddy banks while dust and noise fill the air. The smell of thousands of animals, the wheeling vultures overhead, and the predator tension on the banks create an almost overwhelming sensory experience. Between crossings, vast herds carpet the golden grasslands as far as the eye can see, accompanied by zebra and Thomson's gazelle. Dawn light turns the plains amber and brings the most active hunting behaviour, making early mornings the most electrifying time to be in a vehicle on the Mara.
