Ginkgo Avenue Autumn — Meiji Jingu Gaien Tokyo Japan

The ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) avenue at Jingu Gaien in Tokyo — 146 trees forming a 300-metre boulevard whose combined canopy turns uniformly brilliant yellow from mid-November to early December — is Japan's most celebrated single-location autumn ginkgo display and one of Tokyo's most anticipated seasonal events. The ginkgo's ancient lineage (unchanged for 200 million years, a 'living fossil' like the tuatara and coelacanth) combined with the boulevard's perfect geometry and the simultaneous gold of all 146 trees creates a visual effect of extraordinary purity: the yellow canopy overhead, the yellow ground carpet below, and the yellow wall on both sides producing a complete gold environment for the 5–10 peak days before leaf fall. The avenue's associated Ginkgo Festival, the yaki-imo (roasted sweet potato) vendors, and the Tokyo skyline visible at the avenue's end add a Japanese urban cultural dimension to a botanical spectacle of genuine beauty.

About this spectacle

The Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue lines a 300-metre boulevard in central Tokyo with 146 ginkgo trees whose canopies close overhead to form a tunnel of gold. From mid-November into early December — typically across 5–10 peak days — every tree turns simultaneously, creating an immersive golden environment: sunlight filters through yellow leaves above, a deepening carpet of fallen leaves below, and walls of gold on either side. Morning light is particularly prized, casting warm tones along the tree-lined corridor with the Tokyo skyline framing the far end. Street vendors sell yaki-imo (roasted sweet potato), adding warmth and fragrance to the autumn air. The annual Ginkgo Festival draws large weekend crowds. The visual effect is one of extraordinary uniformity — no patchy timing, no staggered colour — but a single synchronized golden flush across all 146 trees, making this among the most photogenic autumn leaf displays in Japan.
