Geumgangsong Uljin Pine Forest
One of Korea's most celebrated stands of Geumgang red pine, where strikingly straight rust-red trunks rise into a serene, cathedral-like canopy.
About this spectacle
The Geumgangsong Uljin Pine Forest in North Gyeongsang Province preserves a rare stand of Pinus densiflora, commonly known as Geumgang pine or Korean red pine, celebrated for its characteristically straight, rust-red trunks and feathery emerald canopy. Walking among these towering trees, visitors experience a cathedral-like hush broken only by wind through the needles and the occasional call of forest birds. The forest floor is carpeted with fallen needles that soften every footfall, and shafts of light filtering through the high canopy create shifting patterns of gold and shadow. In autumn the surrounding deciduous trees add warm amber and crimson tones to the understory, while winter snow draped over the red-barked pines produces a striking contrast. The site is regarded as one of the finest remaining examples of this iconic Korean pine ecosystem, offering a quiet, immersive encounter with an ancient-feeling woodland landscape.
