Gentoo Penguin Breeding Colony — Falkland Islands
One of the Southern Hemisphere's most accessible penguin colonies, where thousands of gentoos nest, call, and raise chicks against a raw Atlantic backdrop.
About this spectacle
Standing among thousands of gentoo penguins at their Falkland Islands breeding colony is an overwhelming sensory experience. The air is thick with the braying calls of adults and the persistent cheeping of hungry chicks. Birds waddle purposefully between the ocean and their nests, returning with crops full of fish and squid to feed downy grey youngsters. The colony smells strongly of guano and salt wind. Courting pairs bow and preen, while territorial disputes erupt in brief flipper-slapping skirmishes. Against a backdrop of rolling tussock grass and open Atlantic sky, the sheer density of life — tens of thousands of birds moving in every direction — creates a spectacle that feels prehistoric and utterly alive. Gentoos are among the world's fastest-swimming penguins, and watching them porpoise through surf before hauling ashore is a highlight easily observed from colony edges.
