About this spectacle

Each May, the Rosengarten in Bad Langensalza transforms into a fragrant tapestry of colour as its celebrated collection of old lilac cultivars bursts into full bloom. Visitors move through arching canopies of blossom in deep purple, soft violet, creamy white and rosy pink, the heavy perfume hanging in the warm spring air. The historic garden setting lends the display a sense of quiet elegance — the blooms massed along paths and over pergolas, drawing bees and butterflies in equal measure. The spectacle is concentrated and relatively brief, typically lasting two to three weeks, giving it the electric quality of something that must be caught before it passes. Morning light filters softly through the petals, and the garden is small enough to explore slowly, returning to favourite specimens again and again.
