Males raise and wave their single enlarged orange claw in rhythmic, species-specific mating displays, and the synchronised motion rolls across the mud in visible waves — as though the ground itself is breathing. At peak density, hundreds of crabs occupy every square metre, so the spectacle is less individual animal-watching and more a collective visual phenomenon. The air above the mud banks carries the subtle click and rustle of claws and legs.
