European Storm Petrel Breeding Colony (Mousa, Shetland) — Mousa Island
Thousands of storm petrels swirl around a prehistoric broch after dark in a uniquely intimate, sound-filled nocturnal seabird spectacle.
About this spectacle
Mousa Island hosts one of the world's most accessible seabird nocturnal spectacles. Each summer, thousands of European Storm Petrels return to their burrows inside and around the ancient Mousa Broch after dark, filling the air with an eerie churring and purring chorus audible before a single bird is seen. Visitors arrive by small boat at dusk, waiting as the sky dims and the petrels materialise from the darkness — tiny, fluttering silhouettes circling the ancient stone tower. The sound is extraordinary: a sustained, insect-like trilling from hundreds of birds simultaneously. The island itself is remote and largely treeless, amplifying the sense of isolation and wildness. At close range, petrels can land on clothing or hands, making encounters remarkably intimate. The experience ends as dawn approaches and the birds fall silent, retreating into crevices and burrow entrances.
