Estaca de Bares seabird migration
Europe's finest seabird migration watchpoint: at Iberia's northernmost tip, autumn gales drive torrents of gannets, skuas, and shearwaters past an exposed Atlantic headland.
About this spectacle
Punta de Estaca de Bares, the northernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, is one of Europe's premier seabird migration watchpoints. From this exposed headland jutting into the collision of the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea, observers witness torrents of gannets, skuas, shearwaters, auks, and storm-petrels streaming past on autumn winds. On peak days, the sheer volume of birds riding the gales is overwhelming — thousands of individuals funnelled past the point in a matter of hours. The crashing sea below, the salt spray, and the roar of the wind are as much a part of the experience as the birds themselves. Spring brings a quieter but rewarding return passage. Dedicated seawatchers stand for hours behind shelters, scanning the horizon with telescopes as species after species materialises from the grey Atlantic swell.
