Engbertsdijksvenen
One of the Netherlands' largest intact raised bogs, ablaze with cottongrass and heather across a vast, sky-filled moorland.
About this spectacle
Engbertsdijksvenen is one of the largest raised bog reserves in the Netherlands, a vast, open expanse of sphagnum moss, cotton grass, and dwarf shrubs stretching under wide Overijssel skies. In summer the bog erupts in colour: white tufts of cottongrass nod in the wind, purple heather blooms in late summer, and insectivorous sundew plants glisten with sticky dew drops. The flat, treeless landscape creates an almost surreal sense of openness, with pools of dark peat water reflecting shifting clouds. Birds such as snipe and curlew call across the moor, and dragonflies dart above the bog pools. Boardwalk trails allow visitors to move through this fragile ecosystem without disturbing it, offering a meditative, wind-swept experience quite unlike the pastoral Dutch countryside. The scent of damp peat and heather is distinctive and pervasive. Dawn visits reward with mist rising from the moss surface and excellent chances of encountering breeding waders.
