Eleonora's Falcon Colony — Paros Greece
Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) breeds only on Mediterranean islands and north African cliffs — 80% of the world population on Greek islands including Paros, Naxos, and the Cyclades — and times its breeding to coincide with the autumn passerine migration so that chicks are fed on migrating warblers and flycatchers caught in the aerial hunting operations above the colony cliffs from August through October. At Paros's sea cliff colonies, 30–50 pairs patrol the cliff face in the evening's pre-sunset aerial hunting, their long-winged silhouette and aggressive pursuit of passing migrants creating one of the Aegean's finest aerial raptor spectacles. The colony's evening activity — pairs hunting cooperatively, chasing, and exchanging prey in mid-air — represents one of the most sophisticated aerial hunting strategies of any falcon species, and the Cyclades' blue-and-white island landscape provides an aesthetic backdrop of quality commensurate with the birds' elegance.
About this spectacle
At Paros's sea cliffs, the evening air fills with the swift, scything silhouettes of Eleonora's falcons — long-winged, dark, and relentlessly purposeful. From August through October, 30–50 pairs launch from the cliff face as the sun drops, intercepting exhausted warblers and flycatchers riding the autumn migration stream across the Aegean. The falcons hunt cooperatively, coordinating pursuits and exchanging live prey mid-air — a display of aerial athleticism rarely matched in the bird world. The deep blue of the Aegean and the white-washed geometry of the Cyclades islands frame every chase, creating a visual spectacle as aesthetically rich as it is behaviourally remarkable. The sound of wingbeats, alarm calls, and the occasional sharp kee-kee-kee of a hunting falcon cuts through the sea breeze. Positioning yourself above or at cliff-top level before sunset, watching the colony build into a frenzy of pursuit and interception, delivers a sustained, immersive encounter with one of Europe's most specialised birds of prey.
