Düne Heligoland — Grey Seal Colony
Grey seal pups born on the beaches of Düne (off Heligoland) Nov–Jan; harbour seals year-round.
About this spectacle
On the sandy beach island of Düne, a small satellite of Heligoland in the North Sea, one of Germany's most remarkable wildlife spectacles unfolds each winter. From November through January, grey seal cows haul out to give birth, filling the beach with white-coated pups, bellowing adults, and the constant theatre of competing bulls. Visitors can watch from designated viewing areas on the beach itself — close enough to hear the pups calling and smell the salt-soaked colony. Harbour seals are present throughout the year, resting on sandbanks and slipping in and out of the surf. The setting is remote and raw: open sky, North Sea wind, and almost no human infrastructure, giving the experience an intimacy rare for European wildlife watching. Outside pupping season, the colony remains active with moulting, resting, and socialising animals, making any visit worthwhile.
