Drömling

About this spectacle

The Drömling is a vast, rewilded floodplain mosaic in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, where centuries-old drainage channels have been partially restored to create a patchwork of wet meadows, alder carr, and shallow pools. During spring and autumn, the landscape fills with the calls of wading birds and waterfowl — cranes gathering in impressive numbers, grey herons stalking the shallows, and lapwings tumbling over damp grasslands. Dawn brings a wall of bird sound that carries across the flat, open terrain. The soft light of early morning reflects off flooded meadows, creating a mirror-world effect that rewards patient observers and photographers alike. White-tailed eagles are resident, quartering the reedbeds, while otters leave their traces along the dyke-side paths. The flatness of the landscape means weather moves dramatically overhead, with wide skies and unbroken horizons giving the area a quietly immersive, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
