About this spectacle

The Danube Delta is one of Europe's great wildlife spectacles — a vast labyrinth of channels, reed beds, lakes, and willow forests where the Danube fans out into the Black Sea. Visitors navigate by boat through corridors of papyrus and white willows, startling herons, cormorants, and white pelicans from their perches. The air fills with the constant chorus of frogs, warblers, and the prehistoric wingbeats of great white pelican colonies. In spring and autumn, the skies darken with migrating flocks of geese, ducks, and waders pausing on their flyways. The water glitters with surface-feeding fish, while marsh harriers quarter low over the reeds. Sunrise on the open lakes — when mist lifts off the water and pelicans rise in spiralling thermals — is among the most memorable wildlife experiences in Europe.
