About this spectacle

Each October, the Kelbra Reservoir in the Kyffhäuser Nature Park becomes one of Central Europe's most dramatic birding stages as up to 30,000 common cranes descend to rest and feed. Visitors gather before first light at the dedicated crane tower, listening to the building chorus of bugling calls before wave after wave of grey silhouettes lift into the dawn sky, banking over gypsum crags and ancient steppe grasslands below. Salt meadows that feel transplanted from the coast fringe the shoreline, creating an incongruous, otherworldly atmosphere. At dusk the flow reverses: skeins of cranes pour back in from the surrounding fields, their metallic calls echoing off the Kyffhäuser mountain. The tower itself focuses the experience, compressing thousands of birds into a single sweeping panorama. Cold, still October mornings amplify the sound; mist over the reservoir adds atmosphere. The landscape — gypsum outcrops, feather-grass steppe, and open water — provides a rich, layered backdrop that makes this stopover feel unlike any other crane site in Germany.
