About this spectacle

Each October, up to 70,000 grey cranes descend on the shallow Bodden lagoon of the Darß-Zingst peninsula along Germany's Baltic coast, forming one of Europe's most spectacular wildlife gatherings. The birds roost overnight standing in the water, a behaviour evolved to deter foxes and other ground predators. Before dawn, visitors board small boats from Zingst and glide silently across the still lagoon, coming within metres of tens of thousands of roosting birds. As the first light breaks, the cranes explode skyward in wave after wave, filling the horizon with grey wings and flooding the air with their resonant, bugling calls that carry for kilometres across the flat coastal landscape. The scale is overwhelming — the sky darkens with birds, the sound is visceral, and the cold Baltic morning air adds a raw, elemental quality to the experience. No telephoto lens is needed: the birds are simply everywhere, all around you.
