Crane Migration Fischland-Darß — Mecklenburg Germany

The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula on Germany's Baltic coast is the country's finest crane staging ground — up to 60,000 common cranes (Grus grus) roosting nightly on the Bodden lagoons in October and November, their evening fly-in from the surrounding agricultural fields producing a sky-filling column of birds visible from the coastal road for 2 hours before dark. The Darß Forest's observation towers above the Bodden provide elevation views of the entire fly-in spectacle, and the combination of the Baltic coastal landscape (sand dunes, reed beds, and tidal lagoons), the cranes' bugling calls filling the air before they are visible, and the sheer quantity of birds creates one of northern Europe's most powerful coastal migration spectacles. The morning departure — the entire roost lifting simultaneously in response to an unknown signal before dawn — is audible 5 kilometres away and creates a sky darkened by cranes for 30 minutes.

About this spectacle

Each October and November, the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula becomes the stage for one of northern Europe's most arresting wildlife events. Up to 60,000 common cranes converge on the Bodden lagoons to roost nightly, and the evening fly-in — birds streaming in columns from surrounding farmland — fills the sky for roughly two hours before dark. Long before the cranes are visible, their bugling calls roll across the reed beds and sand dunes, building into a wall of sound. From the observation towers in the Darß Forest, visitors look out over the tidal lagoons and watch the entire aerial procession unfold at eye level. The dawn departure is equally extraordinary: the whole roost lifts simultaneously in near-darkness, audible from five kilometres away, and for thirty minutes the sky above the Bodden is thick with wings. The Baltic coastal setting — dunes behind you, reed beds below, grey water stretching to the horizon — frames the spectacle with spare, wintry beauty that amplifies the scale of what is happening above.
