Common Seal Pupping Season — Halligen Islands, Schleswig-Holstein
Every June and July, the remote Halligen islands and sandbanks of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea host one of Europe's most accessible common seal pupping sites, where hundreds of seal mothers give birth on the exposed tidal sandbanks around the grass-covered island "Warften". Boat trips from Husum and the North Frisian islands pass within metres of hauled-out mothers with white-coated pups, while grey seal bulls patrol the channels — an utterly wild spectacle in the world's largest intertidal zone just an hour from Hamburg.
About this spectacle
Each June and July, the tidal sandbanks and Halligen islands of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea transform into a nursery for hundreds of common seals. From the deck of a boat departing Husum or the North Frisian islands, visitors glide silently past hauled-out mothers and their white-coated newborn pups lying on glistening sand exposed by the retreating tide. The air carries the sharp, briny scent of the North Sea, punctuated by the soft barking and snuffling of pups calling to their mothers. Grey seal bulls cruise the shallow channels, adding bulk and drama to the scene. The surrounding Wadden Sea — the world's largest continuous intertidal zone — stretches to the horizon in every direction, a vast, flat wilderness of mud, sand and sky. The low, grass-covered Warften mounds of the Halligen sit like green islands above the flood line, framing the sandbanks. Because boats approach under ranger supervision and maintain respectful distances, the seals remain largely undisturbed, behaving naturally — nursing, rolling, and sleeping through the visit.
