Common Genet Night Walk — Coto Doñana Spain
The common genet — a small spotted carnivore of cat-like appearance belonging to the family Viverridae — is widespread across Iberia and is one of the most reliably seen nocturnal carnivores in the Mediterranean scrubland, particularly in Doñana National Park where night drives through the marismas and scrub produce sightings at flashlight range. The genet's distinctive spotted-and-banded pattern, short legs, long tail, and the sinuous, liquid quality of its movement through the scrub make it one of the Iberian Peninsula's most visually elegant nocturnal mammals. Doñana's night tours offer the genet in the same landscape as the elusive Iberian lynx, making evening safaris here among Europe's most productive nocturnal wildlife experiences.
About this spectacle
After dark in Doñana National Park, the scrubland and marisma edges come alive with eyes caught in the beam of a spotlight. The common genet emerges from the maquis with an unhurried, fluid grace — its cream-and-black spotted coat and ringed tail glowing momentarily before it melts back into the vegetation. Visitors riding through the park on licensed night-drive tours scan low branches, dense shrubs, and the edges of open sandy tracks. Genets often pause just long enough to study the vehicle before retreating, giving genuine close-range views. The soundscape is rich with nightjars churring and distant frogs, while the same drive may reveal barn owls quartering the marismas, red deer at the track margins, and — on the rarest of evenings — an Iberian lynx silhouetted in the headlights. The genet's sinuous, cat-like silhouette and patterned coat make each sighting feel like a private audience with one of Europe's most elegant small carnivores.
