Colca Canyon Condor Soaring Season — Arequipa Peru

Colca Canyon is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon — 3,270 metres at its deepest point — and the enormous thermal columns rising from its sun-heated walls are the primary flight corridor for Andean condors, the world's largest flying bird. From the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, condors rise from roosts 400 metres below shortly after 8am and soar past at eye level and above, their 3.2-metre wingspans filling binoculars as they pass within tens of metres of the viewing platform. In the canyon below, Inca terracing over 2,000 years old is still farmed, with traditional Collagua communities on the valley floor. Families of condors — parents with immature birds still showing brown juvenile plumage — often soar together in the same thermal, offering a multi-generational spectacle above one of the Western Hemisphere's deepest gorges.

About this spectacle

At Cruz del Cóndor, perched on the rim of one of the Western Hemisphere's deepest gorges, visitors gather before 8am and wait as the canyon walls below begin absorbing the morning sun. Shortly after 8am, Andean condors — the world's largest flying birds, with wingspans reaching 3.2 metres — rise from roosts 400 metres below on thermal columns generated by the sun-heated rock. They crest the rim and glide past at eye level and above, close enough to fill binoculars without effort and to hear the rush of air through primary feathers. Families travel in the same thermal: glossy black adults with white collar patches alongside brown-plumaged juveniles, offering a visual study in condor generations. Below the soaring birds, Inca terracing still under cultivation stitches the canyon walls in geometric green, framing every upward glance with 2,000 years of human history. The spectacle typically peaks within the first couple of hours after sunrise, then tapers as thermals shift.
