Cherry Blossom — Gyeongju
The ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom transforms each spring as cherry blossoms frame historic royal tombs and stone pagodas in a uniquely Korean scene.
About this spectacle
Each spring, the ancient streets and parklands of Gyeongju are canopied in clouds of pale pink cherry blossoms. At Tumuli Park, flowering trees line the paths that wind between the great grass-covered royal burial mounds of the Silla Kingdom, their rounded silhouettes providing a backdrop unlike anywhere else in East Asia. Stone pagodas and ancient earthen tombs emerge softly through drifts of falling petals, and the morning light filters through the blossoms to cast a gentle, diffused glow across the landscape. The air carries a faint sweetness, and petals collect in drifts along the walking paths. Visitors stroll beneath arching blossom tunnels, pausing to photograph the interplay of fragile flowers against the monumental green mounds. The scene rewards early risers: at dawn the crowds are thinner, the light is warmest, and the reflections in nearby ponds are at their stillest. As the breeze moves through, petals fall in slow, continuous showers.
