Carmanah Walbran Sitka Spruce Giants
Among Canada's tallest Sitka spruce, Carmanah Walbran's ancient rainforest giants rise over a moss-carpeted valley on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island.
About this spectacle
Deep in the temperate rainforest of Vancouver Island's Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park, ancient Sitka spruce trees soar to heights that dwarf everything around them. Walking the valley floor means threading through a cathedral of green: moss-draped trunks wider than a car, ferns carpeting every surface, and an almost total canopy closure that muffles sound and filters light into shifting green beams. The air is saturated with moisture and the earthy scent of centuries of decay and regrowth. Some individuals here rank among the tallest trees in Canada. The forest floor is a tangle of nurse logs and root masses that feel prehistoric. Birdsong echoes distantly, and the creek that carved this valley provides a constant low murmur. It is a place of immense scale — you feel genuinely small here — and the contrast between the massive living columns and the delicate understory ferns creates a visual drama that few forests in the world can match.
