Carlsbad Cavern Bat Flight
Every summer dusk, hundreds of thousands of free-tailed bats spiral out of Carlsbad Cavern in a living, swirling column — one of North America's most dramatic wildlife spectacles.
About this spectacle
Each summer evening at Carlsbad Cavern, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiral out of the natural cave entrance in a living, swirling column that blackens the sky at dusk. Visitors gather at the outdoor amphitheater carved into the hillside above the cave mouth, watching as the flight builds from a trickle to a roaring, spiraling mass. The sound is extraordinary — a soft thunder of wingbeats mixed with high-pitched chittering. The bats depart to hunt insects across the Chihuahuan Desert, and the column can last from minutes to over an hour depending on colony size. Rangers deliver a short talk before the flight begins, grounding visitors in the biology of the spectacle. The air carries a warm, dusty desert smell, and as the light fades the bats merge into the darkening sky. It is one of North America's most accessible and dramatic wildlife events, requiring nothing more than showing up and looking up.
