Cape Gannet Breeding Colony — Malgas Island
One of the world's largest Cape Gannet colonies, where thousands of black-and-white seabirds pack a small island in a deafening, sky-filling spectacle.
About this spectacle
Malgas Island hosts one of the world's largest Cape Gannet breeding colonies, where tens of thousands of these striking black-and-white seabirds crowd together in a dense, cacophonous city of life. Visitors witness constant aerial activity as gannets wheel overhead before plunge-diving into the cold Atlantic waters. On the colony itself, the sound is overwhelming — a continuous chorus of harsh calls — while the smell of guano is unmistakable and distinctive. Nesting pairs engage in elaborate mutual preening and bill-fencing displays, and fluffy grey chicks huddle close to parents. The contrast of brilliant white adults, golden-washed heads, and ink-black wingtips against the island's rocky terrain creates an extraordinary visual spectacle. Access is typically via boat, bringing visitors close to the colony's edge where the sheer density of birds creates an immersive, almost surreal encounter with wild nature.
