Buchen-Laubaustrieb Hainich
Explosive light-green canopy of beech in late April in Hainich NP.
About this spectacle
Each spring, the ancient beech forests of Hainich National Park in Thuringia ignite with a wave of impossibly fresh, light-green foliage. As April draws to a close, unfurling leaves catch low sunlight and transform the canopy into a luminous, translucent ceiling of lime and chartreuse. Walking beneath it feels like moving through stained glass — the air softened, the light filtered into a cool, glowing green. The forest floor carpets itself in wild garlic and wood anemones, and birdsong fills the still air as migrants return. The spectacle lasts only a brief window before leaves darken and the canopy closes, making timing everything. Hainich is one of Germany's finest primeval beech forests, and the leaf-burst here is among the most vivid in Central Europe.
