Blue Dragon Nudibranch Season — Tulamben Bali

Tulamben's USAT Liberty wreck dive site in northeast Bali hosts one of Southeast Asia's most diverse nudibranch assemblages, with peak species diversity and density during the upwelling months of July to September when cooler nutrient-rich water brings exceptional clarity and increases invertebrate productivity on the wreck. Nudibranchs — shell-less molluscs displaying some of the most vivid colouration in the animal kingdom — occur here in densities of 30–40 species in a single dive, including the blue dragon Glaucus atlanticus, the Spanish dancer Hexabranchus sanguineus, and the chromodorid species whose colours range from pure white to vivid purple and orange. The wreck itself — 120 metres long and now a reef structure of extraordinary biological richness — provides habitat for pygmy seahorses, mimic octopuses, and ghost pipefish in addition to the nudibranch communities, making this the most species-rich easily-accessible dive site in the Coral Triangle.

About this spectacle

Descending onto the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, divers enter a world of extraordinary chromatic intensity. The 120-metre steel hull, now encrusted with decades of coral growth, bristles with some of the most vividly coloured animals on earth. During the July-to-September upwelling season, cooler nutrient-rich water sharpens visibility and ignites invertebrate productivity, bringing 30–40 nudibranch species into view within a single dive. The electric-blue tendrils of Glaucus atlanticus drift at the surface, the flamboyant Spanish dancer Hexabranchus sanguineus unfurls in slow spirals, and chromodorids in pure white, vivid purple, and burnt orange decorate every encrusted surface. Beyond nudibranchs, the wreck shelters pygmy seahorses gripping sea fans, ghost pipefish hovering like leaf litter, and mimic octopuses threading through rubble. Morning dives bring the best light and calmest conditions. The site is accessible from shore by a short swim, requiring no boat, making this extraordinary biodiversity available to recreational divers of modest experience.
