Beluga Whale Belukha — St. Lawrence River Canada

The St. Lawrence estuary beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) population — the world's southernmost resident beluga population, 900 individuals living year-round in the cold St. Lawrence between Tadoussac and the Saguenay fjord — provides the most accessible beluga encounter in North America. The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park's kayaking and whale watching boat tours produce beluga sightings on virtually every excursion, and the whales' complete white colouring (adults only — calves are grey, turning white by age 5), their lack of a dorsal fin, and their extraordinary vocalisations ('the canaries of the sea', producing over 11,000 sounds per hour) create one of Canada's most distinctive cetacean encounters. The Tadoussac area's combination of the beluga population, the blue whale feeding (the largest animal on Earth feeding alongside the 5-metre beluga), and the Saguenay fjord's dramatic scenery makes it Canada's finest whale watching destination accessible by road.

About this spectacle

From the confluence of the Saguenay fjord and the St. Lawrence estuary, visitors encounter the world's southernmost resident beluga population — roughly 900 pure-white adults and grey juveniles moving through frigid, nutrient-rich waters. Aboard kayaks or whale-watching boats operating out of Tadoussac, you are almost certain to come within close range of these blunt-headed, finless whales, hearing their extraordinary repertoire of clicks, chirps, and whistles resonating through hulls and paddle shafts. Adults glow startlingly white against dark blue water; calves alongside them are slate-grey, not yet bleached by age. The surrounding drama intensifies with the presence of blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — feeding in the same stretch of estuary. The Saguenay fjord's steep forested walls provide a cinematic backdrop. Morning light on calm water produces ideal viewing and photography conditions. Hydrophones sometimes offered on tour vessels let you hear the 'canaries of the sea' in real time, adding an acoustic dimension rare in any wildlife encounter.
