Aya Old-Growth Forest in Higashimorokata County, Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest remaining tracts of broadleaf evergreen forest. Walking through it, visitors experience a cathedral of towering chinquapin, oak, and camphor trees draped in moss, their canopy filtering pale green light onto a dense understory. The air is cool, damp, and thick with birdsong and the soft sounds of hidden streams. Seasonal transitions are vivid: spring brings delicate new leaf growth in a hundred shades of green, summer deepens the canopy into shade, autumn ignites the deciduous layers with amber and crimson, and winter reveals the architecture of ancient trunks. The forest floor is carpeted with ferns and wildflowers. It is an immersive, quietly dramatic landscape that rewards slow walking and patient observation, offering a sense of primeval Japan that has largely vanished from the rest of Kyushu.
