Avery Island Bird City
One of the oldest bird sanctuaries in North America, where thousands of egrets, spoonbills, and herons nest in the live oaks of Louisiana's Avery Island.
About this spectacle
Avery Island's Bird City is a colonial waterbird rookery on the grounds of Tabasco's famous salt dome island in coastal Louisiana. Visitors standing along the sanctuary's edge look out over a dense congregation of great egrets, snowy egrets, tricolored herons, and roseate spoonbills nesting in the live oaks and willows just feet away. The air fills with the calls of hundreds of birds tending nests, and the sky becomes a slow wheel of white and pink wings at dusk as birds return to roost. The scent of warm brackish marsh mingles with the rustle of feathers overhead. It is one of the oldest managed bird sanctuaries in North America, and the sheer density of nesting birds — visible from a short walking path — makes it an accessible but genuinely striking wildlife encounter. Peak activity from late spring through summer sees chicks being fed and young birds taking first flights, while the surrounding jungle gardens add lush tropical context to every frame.
