Autumn Larches Dolomites Colour — Val di Funes Italy

The larch forests of the Dolomites turn gold in October — the only European conifer that drops its needles, the larch colours brilliant yellow before needle fall, and the Val di Funes landscape beneath the Puez-Odle Group with the Villnöss valley church in the foreground is one of the most photographed autumn landscapes in Europe. The combination of the Dolomites' pink-white vertical rock faces (coloured by the Dolomia mineral calcium magnesium carbonate), the golden larch forests on every accessible slope, the green valley pastures still intensely coloured in October, and the traditional Ladin farmsteads creates a colour range — pink, white, gold, and green — of exceptional richness and elegance. The peak window of 7–10 days in early–mid October must be timed with weather, as the first Dolomite snowfall can strip the larches overnight and end the season abruptly.

About this spectacle

Each October, the larch forests clinging to the slopes of the Dolomites ignite in brilliant gold — a transformation unique among European conifers. In Val di Funes, this spectacle is framed by the soaring pink-white spires of the Puez-Odle Group, whose dolomite rock glows warm at dawn against the canopy of yellow needles below. The iconic church of St. Magdalena sits in the valley floor, surrounded by emerald pastures that hold their green well into autumn, completing a palette of pink, white, gold, and green that photographers travel from across Europe to capture. Morning light catches the rock faces with particular intensity, casting long shadows across the forest. The window is ruthlessly brief — perhaps 7 to 10 days in early to mid-October — and a single overnight snowstorm can strip the larches bare and close the season without warning. Traditional Ladin farmsteads dot the slopes, adding human scale and texture to the scene. Visitors should expect crisp mountain air, excellent walking paths between viewpoints, and the quiet urgency of a spectacle that waits for no one.
