Auau Channel Humpback Whales
One of Earth's densest winter humpback whale gatherings unfolds in the warm, sheltered waters between Maui, Lanai, and Molokai.
About this spectacle
The Auau Channel, the warm sheltered waters between Maui, Lanai, and Molokai, serves as one of the world's premier humpback whale nurseries each winter. Visitors witness breaching, tail-slapping, and pectoral fin waving from humpbacks that have traveled thousands of miles from Alaskan feeding grounds. The haunting, complex songs of male whales can sometimes be heard underwater or even through the hull of a boat. Mother-calf pairs glide near the surface in calm turquoise waters, while competitive pods of males pursue females in dramatic surface-active groups. Whale watch boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards all offer different vantage points. On clear days, the volcanic silhouettes of neighboring islands frame the horizon, making each sighting visually spectacular. The combination of sheer whale density, calm channel conditions, and tropical backdrop makes this one of the most accessible and rewarding cetacean encounters on earth.
