Apfelblüte Altes Land
Largest contiguous fruit-growing region in Northern Europe; peak early May, near Jork.
About this spectacle
In early May, the Altes Land transforms into a vast tapestry of white and pale pink as millions of apple and cherry trees burst into bloom across the flat, dike-lined landscape west of Hamburg. The air carries a soft, sweet fragrance, and the contrast of blossoming orchards against the old Elbe farmhouses and reed-thatched Vierlanden architecture is striking. Visitors cycle or walk along dyke paths flanked by flowering rows stretching to the horizon, with occasional views across tidal channels. The scale is the spectacle: this is Northern Europe's largest contiguous fruit-growing region, and during peak bloom the entire region feels like a living garden. Birdsong and buzzing pollinators fill the mild spring air. It is unhurried, pastoral, and distinctly North German in character — accessible yet genuinely impressive in extent.
