Antelope Island Bison
Free-roaming bison graze beside the Great Salt Lake on a wild island accessible by causeway — one of the most accessible large-herd bison experiences in the US.
About this spectacle
Antelope Island, rising from the Great Salt Lake in Utah, is home to one of the oldest and largest free-roaming bison herds in North America. Visitors drive or hike across the island's windswept grasslands and encounter bison at close range — massive, unhurried animals grazing against a backdrop of salt flats, mountain ridges, and the shimmering lake. The scale of the landscape amplifies the experience: a single bison standing on a ridge can look prehistoric. In autumn, the island hosts a celebrated roundup when rangers on horseback gather the herd, creating a scene of dust and thunder. Pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and shorebirds add variety. The light here — especially at golden hour — is extraordinary, with the reflective lake surface and open sky producing a palette that photographers prize. Wind is near-constant, carrying the faint mineral scent of the lake.
