Anhinga Trail Wildlife
A paved boardwalk through the Everglades where anhingas, herons, and alligators perform daily at arm's length.
About this spectacle
The Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park offers one of the most accessible wildlife encounters in North America. Walking the short paved boardwalk, visitors come face-to-face with anhingas spreading their wings to dry, great blue herons stalking prey in the shallows, and alligators drifting silently beneath lily pads. The trail skirts Taylor Slough, where clear water reveals turtles, garfish, and bass. In winter, the concentration of wading birds is extraordinary — birds accustomed to human presence allow astonishingly close observation. The air carries the sounds of splashing, wing-beats, and the occasional guttural call of a heron. Early morning brings golden light filtering through cypress and a chorus of bird activity that rewards patience with portfolio-grade sightings.
